Day seven: Salisbury & Ram finish as runners-up
Joe Salisbury & Rajeev Ram ended their week in Montreal as runners-up at the National Bank Open.
Bidding for their second title, the four-time Grand Slam champions lost to top seeds Marcel Granollers & Horacio Zeballos 6-2, 7-6(4) in an hour and 5 minutes.
The British, American team had two set points at the end of the second, but Granollers and Zeballos held on a deciding deuce point before seeing out the match in the tie-break.
It's the first ATP Masters 1000 final that the duo have reached so far this season as they now turn their attention to the Cincinnati Open before the US Open.
Salisbury and Ram will be bidding or an unprecedented fourth straight US Open title this year.
Recent results at National Bank Open
Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram are just one match away from winning the National Bank Open for a second time after saving four match points to win their semi-final against Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski.
The 2021 champions beat the 14th seeds 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 in an hour and 21 minutes to seal a place in the final, where they will face top-ranked team Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.
Having lost the second set, Salisbury and Ram found themselves 9-5 down in the match tie-break and staring down an exit in the final four.
The four-time Grand Slam champions had other ideas - from the jaws of defeat, they reeled off six straight points to close out an emphatic win in Montreal.
On Monday, they will be bidding for their fourth ATP Masters 1000 title together and their second at the National Bank Open.
It will be the ninth time they've played against the Spanish, Argentinian top seeds, with Slaisbury and Ram leading the head-to-head 6-3.
2021 champions Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram continued their winning run at the National Bank Open on Saturday night to reach their first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final of the season.
The four-time Grand Slam champions defeated Daniil Medvedev and Roman Safiullin 6-4, 6-4 in under an hour.
In the next round they will play 14th seeds Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski, who had walkover against Jack Draper and Jannik Sinner in the last round.
Having won the opening set with two key early breaks, Salisbury and Ram moved through the gears – winning every point on their first serves in the second set en route to an impressive victory.
Salisbury and Ram’s North American hard court swing is already off to a strong start as they will be looking to win an unprecedented fourth straight US Open title.
Katie Boulter's run at the National Bank Open in Toronto came to an end on Friday night after she bowed out to world No.3 Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 24 minutes.
Boulter created eight break point opportunities for herself throughout the match but was unable to capitalise on any. It was a different story however for Sabalenka, who proved clincal in only her second tournament back from injury, converting on three of three break points.
Having made the third round of the WTA 1000 on only her first appearance, Boulter now turns her attention to the Cincinnati Open next week.
Doubles
Jack Draper and Jannik Sinner withdrew from their quarter-final with Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski, as the Italian focese on his efforts in the singles.
Third seeds Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram play Daniil Medvedev and Roma Safiullin later today.
British No.1 Katie Boulter is into the third round at the National Bank Open after 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia was forced to retire after two games.
Having received treatment on her back after the opening game, Haddad Maia called the match to a close at 1-1, sending the 28-year-old Brit through to face second seed and world No.3 Aryna Sabalenka in the next round.
Sabalenka is competing in only her second event since her injury in June, but holds a 3-0 head-to-head against Boulter.
Doubles
Third seeds Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram punched their ticket into the quarter-finals after knocking out fellow Brit Lloyd Glasspool and Nikola Mektic 6-3, 7-6(4).
The 2021 champions saved three of three break points to set up a clash with Daniil Medvedev and Roman Safiullin.
They join Jack Draper and Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals who will play Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski.
However, Neal Skupski and Michael Venus bowed out to fourth seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic 7-6(4), 6-3.
Katie Boulter made a winning start at the National Bank Open in the women’s singles, while Harriet Dart and Jack Draper both saw first round exits in Canada.
Boulter knocked out lucky loser Bernarda Pera 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in two hours and 10 minutes to set up a second round clash with 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia.
The British No.1 had been due to play world No.49 Anhelina Kalinina but the Ukranian pulled out late in the day, forcing Boulter to have to adjust to face the American.
The 28-year-old gave the perfect response after losing the second set – saving break points in her opening service game, before eventually going to win the final five games in a row.
Boulter has a good head-to-head record against Haddad Maia, having won both their previous meetings this year on her way to the San Diego title and then again at the Miami Open.
Meanwhile, Dart lost a close contest against 14th seed and world No.24 Daria Schnaider 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2).
Having overturned two breaks in the final set, Dart had served for the match at 6-5, but the 20-year-old fired straight back before taking control in the tie-break.
Draper had a tough match against Australia’s Jordan Thompson, bowing out 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 32 minutes.
Doubles
However, the British No.1 remains in the men’s doubles draw with world No.1 Jannik Sinner after they beat Alexander Bublik and Ben Shelton 7-6(2), 6-2.
Next up for them will either be second seeds Matthew Ebden and Rohan Bopanna or Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski.
Elsewhere in the men’s doubles, Neal Skupski and Michael Venus continued their strong form as a partnership, taking down fellow Brit Jamie Murray and Grigor Dimitrov 7-5, 7-5.
They move on to play fourth seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic next.
Lloyd Glasspool also kicked off his campaign with a win alongside Nikola Mektic – defeating Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-4 to set up a clash with Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram.
Olivia Nicholls and Tereza Mihalikova lost in the first round to Sloane Stephens and Taylor Townsend 6-2, 6-3.
Main draw action got underway on Tuesday, with three Brits involved in the opening rounds of the men’s and women’s doubles.
Dream team Jack Draper and Jannik Sinner made a winning start in Montreal – knocking out 16th seeds Sander Gille and Joran Vliegan 6-0, 6-7(3), 10-8 in an hour and 27 minutes.
After a dominant opening set and having missed out on a break point opportunity in the second, the British No.1 and world No.1 had to come through the match tie-break to secure their victory.
From 7-4 down in the match tie-break, they won six of the final seven points to book a second round clash with fellow singles stars Alexander Bublik and Ben Shelton.
Bublik and Shelton reached round two after Wimbledon champions Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara were forced to retire trailing 7-6(5), 2-1.
There was also defeat for Britain’s Harriet Dart in Toronto as she and Denmark’s Clara Tauson lost 3-6, 6-0, 10-5 against Catherine Harrison and Ashlyn Krueger.
